Jamboree on the Internet is an annual Scouting event run over a long weekend each October. Scouts, Guides and leaders from all over the world meet online and chat, play games and learn about each other's countries.
We run our own camp channel so our group can join in together, with leaders on hand the whole time.
What you can do
- Make friends abroad. Ask someone in another country what their Scout uniform looks like.
- Join games and quizzes. Our leaders run chat challenges through the day.
- Learn how the internet works. Try a real chat protocol, not just an app.
Rules

Be a good Scout/Guide
Be kind, polite and welcoming. The Guide & Scout Law applies online just like it does at camp. No bullying, teasing or put-downs.
Keep your details private
Never share your full name, address, school, phone number, photos or social media. Use a nickname that doesn't give any of that away.
Stay in the open channels
Chat in the public camp channels. Don't take someone into a private message if they're older or you don't know them, and never agree to meet anyone in person.
Keep it clean
No swearing, no adult or violent content, no hate speech, and no spam, shouting in capitals or flooding the channel.
Don't share links or files you can't vouch for
Only post links that are Scouting-related and safe. If someone sends you something odd, don't click it.
Tell someone if it feels wrong
If anyone makes you uncomfortable or asks for personal details, stop chatting, tell a leader, and message a channel operator. You will never be in trouble for speaking up.

Channel operators keep the chat safe. If one asks you to stop something, please do.

Kicks
"You have been kicked from #channel-name by operator-name"
This means that an operator (also known as a moderator or ‘op’) has removed you from the channel for a specified reason. A kick is not permanent and you will be able to return to the channel. You should make sure you know what you did wrong before returning, and read the rules again or ask the operator who kicked you
Bans
"Cannot join #channel-name (You are banned)"
If you continue to break the rules after being kicked, this will result in a channel ban. This is normally used alongside a kick at the same time. A ban prevents you from rejoining the channel for a specific length of time which will normally be stated in the kick message. A ban will give you time to think about your behavior in the channel.
Kills
"You were killed by operator-name"
If you get a message like this, this means that the Operator has terminated your connection to our network. Check the ‘kill’ message to find out why you have been disconnected. Kills are used for repeated rule-breaking after multiple warnings, or as a first sanction in exceptional situations.
G-Lines
"You're banned! Email moderation@Aorakijoti.kiwi with the ERROR line below for help"
If you see something like this when you try to connect, this means that you were banned from the whole Aoraki JOTI IRC Network. Such a ban is only used if you repeatedly break the rules or for extreme behaviour. If you're with a group, this could end the event for all of you. Please contact moderation@Aorakijoti.kiwi for more questions or to appeal.

Who we are
This website and the JOTI chat network are run by the organisers of the Aoraki 2026 JOTI Camp ("we", "us"). We run it independently and we are not part of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. For any privacy question, email help@aorakijoti.kiwi.
What the website collects
The website has no accounts, forms, advertising or analytics, and we don't set tracking cookies. Like any website, our server automatically records basic technical details of each visit, such as your IP address, the time and the pages requested. We use these only to keep the site secure and to fix problems, and we keep them only as long as we need to.
The site loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google when a page loads. Google receives your IP address and browser details when that happens.
The chat
The chat runs on our IRC network, which is separate from this website.
- Nickname: this is whatever you choose. Please don't use your full name or anything else that identifies you.
- Messages: everyone in a channel can see what you write, and operators can see it too. Please don't treat chat as private.
- Connection details: to connect, our server has to see your IP address. We use it only to run the network safely, for example to apply bans.
- Moderation records: when an operator warns, kicks or bans someone, they note the nickname, time and reason. We use these records to keep chat safe and fair.

If you join through our web chat link, the web chat service also handles your connection to the chat network.
Photos in the gallery
We may publish photos from camp. We only publish photos of participants where we have permission, and for anyone under 18 that means permission from a parent or guardian. We don't put full names in photo captions or file names. If you or your child appears in a photo and you'd like it removed, email help@aorakijoti.kiwi and we'll take it down promptly.
Young people
Scouts under 18 need permission from a parent or leader to take part, and a leader should know when they're online. We take the safety of young people seriously. If there is a safety concern, operators may pass relevant information to the participant's leader, parent or guardian, or to the proper authorities.
Operators
Channel operators have a password-protected page and use Discord to coordinate. The operator page keeps the password in your browser's temporary session storage so a refresh doesn't lock you out. It is cleared when you close the tab or press "Lock this page". Discord is a separate service with its own privacy policy.
Who we share information with
We don't sell or rent anyone's information, and we don't use it for marketing. We share information only when it's needed to keep people safe, with a participant's leader, parent or guardian, or when the law requires it. Some services we use, such as Google Fonts and Discord, are run by companies based overseas, so information may be processed outside New Zealand.
Keeping information safe
We take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold. No system is perfectly secure, which is one more reason not to share personal details in chat.
Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can ask us whether we hold personal information about you, ask for a copy, and ask us to correct it. Email help@aorakijoti.kiwi and we'll respond as soon as we can. If you're not happy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
